Club History

Chippenham Sports Club has its roots in the 19th‑century sporting tradition of the town, growing from early cricket and football activity at Westmead and later Hardenhuish Park into a multi‑sport community hub that has served local residents for generations.

Chippenham’s organised sport began in the late 1830s, when the cricket club first played at Westmead before moving to the Hardenhuish estate in 1889, where multiple sports—football, bicycling, harriers, hockey, tennis, bowls and croquet—quickly flourished alongside it. This collaborative sporting environment continued into the 20th century, with clubs relocating across the estate in 1935 to the Bristol Road site that remains the home of community sport today. Over time, the site evolved into what is now known as Chippenham Sports Club, a shared home for bowls, cricket, cycling, hockey, netball, running and tennis reflecting nearly two centuries of local sporting heritage and community involvement.
